Rescue Essentials Sends Traction Splints to Nepal

RESCUE ESSENTIALS, manufacturer of the revolutionary Slishman Traction Splint, has donated 40 new Slishman Traction Splints (STS) to the Nepal relief effort. The STS is the next generation of traction splints, offering proximal traction adjustment, no extension past the patient’s foot and can be used in the event of a concurrent lower leg or ankle injury. The STS has received outstanding reviews from the EMS community. It was a 2012 EMS World Product Innovation Award Winner, 2012 JEMS Hot Product and is only one of several products endorsed by the National Ski Patrol. During the 2010 Haiti earthquake, the inventor, Dr. Slishman, had seven STS splints on patients for up to ten days with zero complications.

The STS requires little training and is easy to apply. It is ideal for stabilizing femur fractures in a disaster situation, as the STS can be used effectively by medics experienced in long bone splinting, even if they have not previously used an STS. The specter of expected aftershocks and the hazards of the re-building process mean that this type of device will likely remain in demand in Nepal for some time to come. Rescue Essentials wishes to thank the America Nepal Foundation for receiving the donation, and the Nepali American soldiers at Joint Base Lewis McChord (JBLM) for helping ship them to Nepal. Thanks also to Barbara Brower, Un Sherpa and Allison Brustin for coordinating the process.
