Hence the name "space blanket"... while not terribly effective, they are also not terribly expensive, heavy or large. And could make the difference.

Space Blankets Don't Work
These devices, although widely used by EMS providers and rescue agencies don't actually work. Whilst they may provide shelter from wind/rain, once they fog up they actually reflect no heat back to the body. There is no scientific evidence to support their use, and in fact studies which show a sealed polythene rubbish sack actually do a better job. Makers of these blankets need to back up their advertising claims with some evidence.
